Happy New Year!

Happy 2010! We went to Thailand for 12 days, a wonderful and entertaining vaca, returning on Dec 31, and I'm just now catching up on non-immediate business after sleeping in, doing heaps of laundry, and tossing out ancient art projects and other clutter.

After 2 weeks with the children, Blaine and I escaped tonight for our Saturday date: to see Avatar. Wow. I'm not a "big movie" person, usually hate them, but I thought it was great: plot, special effects, action, flying dinosaur-like creatures.

Movie tickets

On Friday, which is movie night at our house, we are taking Lucinda and Arno to the movie theater at Roppongi Hills. This is quite rare for us because most American/English kids movies don't come to Tokyo at all or arrive weeks or months after we can rent it on Apple TV.

We're going to see Wall-E - six months or so after it opened in the US.

This is where it gets tricky. The easiest way to buy tickets is over the internet to choose your seats before the theater sells out, as it always does. But Toho Cinemas recently changed its website, and the explanation of which tickets (adult, child, discount, senior) are available at which prices is entirely in Japanese. I guessed at 4 tickets for 1500 yen each, which is probably the adult price; if not, we will have to sort it out on Friday night.

This is the email I received to confirm. Fortunately, I don't have to know Japanese to figure it out.

Movie Night

We've started to turn Friday night into movie night at our house. (We're stealing the idea from our Seattle friends, the Ashbys.) Tonight we ate leftovers, plus fresh yakisoba for the kids, and snacked on fancy cookies, and then we rented a movie with our favorite new toy, Apple TV.

We can get movies from the Tokyo American Club (it has a better selection) but Apple's list is improving. We can choose a movie, rent it for $3-4, download and start watching a minute later. With no late fees. It is so cool!

Tonight we watched Underdog - and the kids LOVED it. I vaguely remember that it got bad reviews, maybe because it appeals to 3-yr-old boys with superhero fixations and 5-yr-old girls who giggle about mild potty humor?

Movie night

Blaine has found a new movie-downloading service: Jaman. For $1.98, he downloads a movie for a week's rental and we watch it over a few nights. They are all independent films, not Big Hollywood.

Tonight - Friday night - we and the children are watching "Kintaro Walks Japan," a documentary about a 20-something guy who, yes, walks the length of Japan's four islands. It's pretty neat. You can watch the whole 1 hr doc via Google.

Last week, we watched two films that we both liked: a darkish Danish movie called "Prague" about a cold-fish Dane who takes his unhappy wife to Prague when his father dies there. And a pleasant Norwegian film called "Import-Export," about a Norwegian guy who wants to marry his Pakistani-Norwegian girlfriend. (The Variety reviewer I've linked to didn't like it, but we did.)

We can see major Hollywood movies in theaters (anything with Brad Pitt, basically) but not much else. Apple's downloadable movie list is tragically lame. Why haven't the studios made their catalogs available yet?
